INEC On Ekiti 2018: Campaign And Go To Jail
The Independent National Electoral Commission, yesterday, threatened to
invoke Section 99 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), which forbids electioneering campaign until 90 days to election.
The new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ekiti State, Prof. Abdul-Ganiyu Raji, warned politicians against subtle or overt campaigns ahead of the 2018 governorship election in the state. He reminded them that if taken to court, penalty for flouting the law was either six months jail term or N500,000 fine.Some politicians at the stakeholders’ meeting where the warning was given, in Ado Ekiti, complained that the situation was common to thetwo major political parties in the state - the APC and PDP.Raji, who resumed recently, replaced Mr Sam Olumekun, who was moved to Edo State prior to the 2015 governorship poll.He said the prohibition would cover jingles being aired on radio and television, as well as billboardserected at strategic locations bearing the portraits of aspirants and announcing or advertising their governorship intentions.
