The Federal Government, on Monday, condemned the new conditions which Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, insists must be met before the five-month old strike could be called off. The three conditions were payment of four months salaries, which accumulated during the period of the strike; immediate implementation of the N1.2 trillion offered by the government to public universities, starting with the release of N100 billion this year and the balance of N1.1 trillion to be spread over five years from 2014. The union also demanded that the salary arrears must not be paid in piecemeal. These were some of the resolutions reached by members of the National Executive Council, NEC, of the union that met in Kano on Friday. Our reader Bright Osas from Iganmu, Apapa, Lagos, sent us a message decrying the situation in his community. According to him, a policeman with Orile Iganmu Police Station, identified as 'Alabi,' has, along with his team, turned local girls into 'sex machines'. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may to hold its postponed National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Friday to decide whether or not to call off the strike it began since July 1st. This was made known by an official on condition of anonymity The source was however uncertain if the NEC meeting will still be held at the Bayero University, Kano where it was initially proposed to hold. The leadership of the Union postponed the scheduled Kano NEC meeting following the demise of one its key members, Festus Iyayi, a former President, who died last Tuesday in a ghastly motor accident on his way to Kano for the postponed NEC meeting.   The source debunked speculations in the social media that ASUU has called off its NEC indefinitely, explaining that the union only  postponed the NEC meeting as a mark of honour and respect for the late Iyayi. The Vice Chancellor of the Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Prof. Femi Mimiko, has said authorities of the university were making efforts that would lead to the end of the 137-day-long strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Already, chairmen of local chapters of ASUU are converging on Kano, preparatory to the meeting, from where a positive resolution is being expected. Chairman of one of the federal universities in the South-South, who did not want his name mentioned, said the strike “may be suspended on Saturday.” “Many of the chapters are disposed to ending this strike, which has cost us all a full semester. “As I speak with you, we (chairmen) are on our way to Kano for NEC meeting tomorrow (today).” Asked if the strike would be suspended, he said: “I think so, judging by reports from the Monday congresses we held simultaneously. We may suspend the strike on Saturday or Sunday.” He, however, admonished government to ensure that it honoured its promise so as not to return the university system to this “sorry past”.
